When we use words like "perfect," it can sound pretentious since taste is subjective and can depend on personal preference and mood. With that said, I want to share my favorite (and almost perfect) version of the Old Fashioned cocktail and how I prepare it.
The Old Fashioned dates back to the early 19th century, before the term "cocktail" was even used. It's believed to have originated in Kentucky, the famous bourbon state in the US, and the recipe has remained mostly the same since then and is the most well-known whiskey cocktail worldwide, regardless of the country or bar you visit.
While there are many Old Fashioned variations, today we'll focus on my version. Here's what you'll need:
2.5 oz. Rye Whiskey (or Bourbon)
4 dashes of Angostura Bitters
1/2 Demerara Sugar Cube (if you like it sweeter you can use 1 cube as well)
2 Cocktail Cherries (1 for muddling, 1 for garnish) – I prefer sour cherries if available
1 Orange Slice (for muddling)
1 Orange Twist (for garnish)
Lots of ice to add into the shaker
1 large ice cube (or equivalent small cubes) for serving
Begin by adding the sugar, bitters, 1 cherry, and the orange slice to a shaker or large cup and muddle them until the orange juice, bitters, and sugar are mixed well.
Next, add lots of ice to the shaker and pour in the whiskey. Use a long spoon to swirl the mixture, then let it sit for about a minute while you prepare your serving glass.
Select a nice tumbler glass and place the large ice cube inside. Put the second cherry on top of the ice cube. Cover the top of the shaker with a strainer and pour the cocktail into the glass slowly.
Finally, twist the orange peel on top of the glass to release its oils and add it to the drink.
This version of the Old Fashioned has a hazy appearance due to the muddled orange and cherry, which enhances the flavor. If you prefer a clear version, simply skip the muddling step, but it won't be quite as perfect!
Enjoy your Old Fashioned. Cheers!
